Galen tapped his fingers against the top of his writing table as he glowered into the brazier. Everything was on the brink of falling apart once more. The weak little air elemental he’d sent after Princess Sylvia had yet to contact him. Echo’s unreliable nature was making itself painfully clear, and it was too late for him to send another air elemental after them. The trail was gone. Wherever Evander had smuggled his sister to would take too long for the elementals to uncover.

Echo . . . His upper lip curled in disgust. The weak fool had probably chosen to run away, fleeing both him and the threat of being sent back to her people . . . and the Storm King. It was a delay he found more aggravating purely because it threatened his plans. Princess Sylvia would be a bride before the end of the trade season. And, he had no intention of allowing one of the brutish Volaskin princes to be her waiting groom.

He flattened his hand against the writing table as he recalled Aretas’ abrupt offer of a marriage alliance. He could have instructed the elementals tormenting the old king to include whispers against Prince Ivan and his sons. However, that would’ve been too risky with the utter instability of Aretas’ present state of mind. The kings’ council would be pushed into action. Something he could not allow.

For his plans to proceed as he intended, the council could not be given enough concern to act before he’d finished his final preparations. The colonies were besieged by late storms . . . with rumors it was the doing of the Sea King. Asceules had already reported the ship carrying his new Unseelie was once again delayed from arriving in Chaon by those same storms. An annoyance but not his greatest concern. It was more troubling that the heir of Aretas’ line had yet to be located by his spies since he’d apparently vanished during the rainy season. Incompetence amongst his spies was most aggravating, and the spy responsible for losing track of the heir had been dealt with by a dhampir in such a way as to remind the rest of the network implanted among the colonies of the high price for failure.

So many aggravations. Galen blew a slow breath out of his nose. The only thing he did not find a source of trouble was that the northern prince was clearly reluctant to offer one of his sons as a participant in Aretas’ new scheme. An irony he did not overlook. It made it easier to stomach the knowledge that another attempt on Ivan’s life whilst he remained in Chaon proper would draw too much attention. For now.

As the crackling flames of the brazier formed into Blaze’s head and shoulders, Galen reached for his wine. The aggravations would be addressed. This was why he never relied on a single plan. He glanced at the papyrus scroll resting on the table even as he gestured for Blaze to begin his report and a jolt of satisfaction darted through him.
